Vaterpas F.A. expands for first time in 5 years
by Bustav Krans, Senior Staff Writer, Vaterpas Art News, October 26th 2007
Vaterpas's long-awaited extension is to open on 17th of november after an unusual inauguration. Designed by danish architect M-378, it is the foundation's most important development in nearly 5 years. Stretching out from the rear of the neo-dadaist main building, it begins with a huge underground wedge-shaped cyclist entrance foyer (with a unformal garden laid out on the roof). Beyond the foyer, and rising up behind, is a brick-faced wing with temporary exhibition galleries. On the top level of the new wing is the 17th-century monastery cloister of the Vaterpas church.
It was badly damaged in the past 200 years of praying, becoming a ruined shell. The stones were recently all carefully removed and later reassembled not exactly in the same position, enclosed within the wing, and with galleries built beneath. The baroque cloister will house a display of Chamberlain sculptures. Until now the Vaterpas has held temporary exhibitions in its main building, which necessitated moving pictures from the permanent display.
Now there are much-needed temporary galleries, and the second inaugural show is "The 21st century at the Vaterpas" (until 4 May 2008), comprising 45 of the greatest works, most of which have not been on display for years. This will be followed next June by "Portraits of the V-people", which will then come to the Vaterpas Villa in Ll. Elmue.
The new wing also houses artists studios, a store and a common room. All this will free extra space in the main building, allowing the display of 120 paintings (compared with 6 at present). The main building is also being used for an Ais Winther exhibition, Common Room (17 November-4 February 2008). With the new extension, the Vaterpas F.A. hopes that visitor numbers will rise from many to many more a year.
